Scenario: SocialNetworkAggregation

Scenario: SocialNetworkAggregation

SummarySocial Networking Aggregation
Group / workshop Digital Identities Status alpha
Project
details...
In this project, we are looking at the usage of data portability technologies to solve the problem of digital identity aggregation and social data liquidity in general. See http://www.w3.org/2008/09/msnws/report for details.

Situation

What is the setting for this scenario? Describe the educational, technological and institutional setup.

Unlike many other scenarios, at the W3C, since we are interested in standardization, we are interested in the broadest possible situation. One situation that arises in many contexts is the fact that a single user may want to control their own data from social networking sites, including its copyright and who is allowed to see it. Furthermore, they would like to aggregate their data, and store a local copy, even if the data is distributed amongst several sites (LinkedIn, Facebook, Bebo, and so on). For example, the user may want to copy this data to their mobile phone address book, share photos only with their family but not with colleagues, and so on.

Task

What is the problem to be solved, or the intended effect?

The intended effect is that the user can use a single-sign in technology to aggregate their information across multiple web-sites and then set permissions for access and a policy for usage. A vendor neutral stack of technologies is needed to address this problem, or at least some base of technologies that other vendors might adopt.

Patterns

Identify patterns appropriate for the situation and the task. How would they inform the solution?

Solution

Describe a possible solution derived from the patterns you selected.

Expected Results

Concrete, measurable criteria for success.

Lessons Learned
