details... Group none

Problem

How to build trust within students when carrying out innovative teaching (potential information communication).
Why is this important? To avoid rejection of activities which should be educationally beneficial.

Context

Introduction of a radically different technique in teaching approach to students with a long experience of other teaching and assessment techniques. There is significant importance placed on the outcome.

Solution

Lots of smaller patterns...
Communicating and Managing Expectations.
- explaining your rationale
- explaining your expectations (behaviour & Learning outcomes)
Demonstrate caring - responsive to individuals
- talking to students about lack of involvement: listening to their situation and trying to come to a solution.

- getting to know your students: their names, bits of information about them (small talk).

    • using their own experience for the context of learning (i.e create a web page about yourself) and respond to this from both a learning AND personal point of view.
    • make personal face to face contact with students (even if only to say hi!).
    • try to remember some aspect of their specific work and inquire about it.
    • acknowledge students OUTSIDE of the class (even just to smile and say hi as you pass).

  • noticing changes in their behaviour.

Different types of feedback

  • on learner performance (initiated by lecturer)
  • on learner performance (initiated by student)
  • on student experience (initiated by student)
  • on student experience (initiated by lecturer)

Provision of feedback channels from learner to teacher.Positively respond to the feedback.
