Problem

This pattern addresses the problem of time management in the completion of project work.

Force 1:

To encourage student-directed learning, students who are given project work might be given a choice of what topic they want to tackle, the delegation of roles and so on.

Force 2:

However, a common problem is that students spend too much time deciding on what to do and making other decisions that they waste a lot of time that might be used for the completion of the project.

Context

  • K-12 students in public schools
  • Project work that is assigned as part of formative assessment

Solution

Milestones might be used to mitigate this problem. Phases such as the task definition and role assignment can be created.

The rubrics of the project can include aspects of milestone fulfillment to encourage students to pace their work and not run out of time.

Example:

  • Defining the task/scope
  • Assignment of roles
  • Brainstorming / discussions

  • Project proposal for teacher's inputs and feedback

  • Research and work on content

  • Training available for consultation

  • Update on progress
  • Creating product
  • Presentation
  • Feedback from teachers and peers
