Patterns of E-Learning Patterns
Patterns of E-Learning Patterns: where do they come from, where do they go?

Over the last few years, we are witnessing a rapid growth in the attention and acknowledgement that design patterns receive in learning sciences as well as in educational practice. Nevertheless, the patterns community in these fields still faces significant challenges and questions we will need to answer if we are to establish the role of design patterns in mainstream research and practice. Among the issues we need to contend are utility, validity, resonance and aggregation.- Utility
- How do we convince others (or ourselves) that the pattern approach is useful? If patterns are a solution, what is the problem and what is the context?
- Validity
- How do we establish design patterns as acceptable scientific method? Should we?
- Resonance
- How do we engage larger audiences in the pattern paradigm? How do we make the outputs of our work reach their target audiences?
- Agregation
- How do we ensure that we build on the work of others rather than replicating it?
This workshop will explore these questions, by invoking participants' experiences as pattern scouts, miners, and evangelists. Using the Participatory Methodology for Practical Design Patterns which emerged from the Learning Patterns and Patterns Language Network projects, we will share case stories, derive design patterns, and sketch future scenarios.
