HCI 2008 Educators Workshop: HCI Disciplinary Commons

Time and Date: 1st September 2008, 9.30-5pm

Location: HCI 2008, Liverpool John Moores

Maps: See www.hci2008.org

Agenda: Schedule for the day

The HCI Disciplinary Commons project, in collaboration with the Pattern Language Network, is running a one day workshop as part of the HCI 2008 conference in Liverpool in September 2008.

Throughout the academic year 2007-08, a group of HCI Educators have been engaging in an HCI Disciplinary Commons, meeting on a monthly basis to discuss their teaching practice, undertake peer observation and engage in peer review. Each participant aimed to produce a portfolio representing their HCI teaching during this period. These portfolios form a body of knowledge about HCI teaching in the UK that may be of use to other practitioners.

This HCI Disciplinary Commons workshop has three aims:

  • To inform the wider community about the process, activity and outcomes of the Commons;
  • To give participants a taste of how the Commons operated;
  • To consider how we might progress to develop meaningful representations for HCI Educators to share practice.

The workshop will be in two parts. In the morning, the facilitators of and the participants in the Commons will give a series of presentations on the priniciples, process and experience of the Commons approach to sharing practice. In the afternoon, workshop participants will take part in activities focused on sharing and representing practice. These activities will be anchored in case studies of HCI teaching practice, submitted prior to the workshop.

The workshop will be of interest to anyone teaching HCI who wishes to share practice with others and anyone interested in methods for sharing practice in general.

To participate in the workshop please submit a brief case study of a successful teaching intervention: something that has worked for you in your HCI teaching practice. You can see examples of the level of detail required in a case study by looking at existing case studies on the Planet wiki. These cases will be discussed in groups, with a view to identifying design patterns relating to teaching HCI. Please note you will need to register to submit a case study. To submit your case study, please go to the Case Studies page, enter a meaningful name for your new case study and then complete the form. Important: please select HCI Disciplinary Commons from the drop down list for the group/workshop name.

Given the nature of the workshop we seek as broad a participation as possible. Space permitting, we intend to accept all applicants who complete a case study,.

Please note that registration to the HCI2008 conference is required, though single day registration for the workshop day is available. If you have trouble getting funding to attend we may be able to help – please contact us. For details about conference registration, please visit http://www.hci2008.org/.
