Situation

What was the setting in which this case study occurred?

Within our university a number of staff are starting to have a presence on social networking sites (e.g. Facebook), most of our students are also there.

Task

What was the problem to be solved, or the intended effect?

Staff are often surprised when students ask to be their "Facebook friend", and don't know how to react.

Actions

What was done to fulfil the task?

We collected examples of what approaches existing staff with Facebook profiles had taken. Then we wrote some blog posts on the matter, this then led to an article in our internal teaching newsletter "Teaching Matters", offering advice to staff, note this was not prescriptive.

Results

What happened? Was is a success? What contributed to the outcomes?

More awareness, and changes to Facebook made a wider set of guidelines possible.

Lessons Learned

What did you learn from the experience?

It is best to be prepared. https://redgloo.sse.reading.ac.uk/ssswills/weblog/2643.html

We are now considering whether staff should follow students on Twitter.
