Situation

What was the setting in which this case study occurred?

This was initially developed in the context of a large "service" course, teaching computer literacy to Business students

Task

What was the problem to be solved, or the intended effect?

The problem was multifold.

a) there were large numbers on the course (300-400) and already two large pieces of assessment. Any new (or revised) piece could not increase the load on the markers

b) plagiarism was rife

c) the students were not demonstrating the required level of familiarity with local environment/applications etc.

Actions

What was done to fulfil the task?

The "driving test" assessment was devised. In this, students were told what they would have to do in advance (just like a driving test). They could practice as often as they liked beforehand (just like a driving test). When they were ready they sought out an examiner (in this case, one of the tutors in a weekly support class, or in additional "drop in" sessions) and were required to demonstrate the tasks, in real time, to the satisfaction of the examiner. If they failed (just like in a driving test) they could re-take until they passed (within a set time limit - 9 weeks in the original instantiation).

Results

What happened? Was is a success? What contributed to the outcomes?

Worked great. Students liked it, staff liked it, it's virtually impossible to plagiarise and skills were demonstrated.
