Situation

What was the setting in which this case study occurred?

In Singapore, students face the common problem of making various mistakes and errors in the writing of Chinese characters.  Chinese Language teachers have tried a variety of teaching/learning strategies in order to solve this problem with no major visible success in this area thus far. These mistakes often result in major expression errors in their writing, thus posing a problem for teachers and others in terms of the ability to comprehend the students’ work submissions.  In fact, this is one of the main causes contributing to the declining standard of the Chinese Language in Singapore.

Task

What was the problem to be solved, or the intended effect?

·     In what ways are students stimulated to learn independently with IDM? ·     Can digital game-based learning effectively correct the mistakes and errors made by students in writing Chinese characters?

Hypothesis / Research Question

Assumption: Students already understand the meaning of the Chinese characters. 1.     Digital game-based learning can effectively correct the mistakes and errors made by students in writing Chinese characters.2.     Digital game-based learning can increase the students’ level of interest in the learning the Chinese Language.3.     Customised Digital Games can stimulate students’ interest to improve their command of Chinese vocabulary (specifically in identifying/correcting errors in the writing/recognition of Chinese characters) for the purposes of self-revision.
