Situation

What was the setting in which this case study occurred?

Teachers who have no extensive experience in blogging, but are assumed to have skills necessary for basic communication via a discussion group and Internet browsing skills.

Task

What was the problem to be solved, or the intended effect?

To introduce educators to using blogging in education in a meaningful way, by providing hands-on experience.

Actions

What was done to fulfil the task?

A 6-week online workshop aiming to introduce participants to edu-blogs. Mentorship and 24/7 moderation was provided, with personalized “Welcome” messages and strong support through different communication channels.

Results

What happened? Was is a success? What contributed to the outcomes?

Participants applied what they had learned almost immediately to their own practice. A community feeling developed, which has evolved into a parallel new Ning space. Closer bonds (and friendship) has developed among some participants, and definitely among moderators.

Lessons Learned

What did you learn from the experience?

Moderating online requires a lot of background work and preparation.

Team spirit is crucial (the sense of community/ feeling of belonging/ cohesion starts within the moderators team).

Supporting and nurturing participants’ learning processes are vital to a positive learning experience.

Flexibility, understanding and tolerance when dealing with participants’ needs and requests are very important.

Showing that one cares, and keeping the communication channels open, invites people to progressively interact in a more spontaneous way.
